"How Will They Ever Eat All These Sandwiches?"

There is a very insistent noise coming from inside what looks like a collection of coats on one of the benches that pass for seats on trains. "Innes," it seems to say. "Innes. Innes. Did you bring the sandwiches, Innes?"

Travel scrabble. Next time, don't forget the travel scrabble. Birmingham is flashing by, a blur of grey through the window. Rain pelts the thick plastic window, streaking down. Every stations lets in more cold air. "I think there is a food car ahead. If you didn't bring the sandwiches. I brought crisps. And chocolate. And other unhealthy things."

The important thing is, the girl in the pile of coats is hungry, Innes. Where the bloody hell are these sandwiches.

One, two, three. Three ah-ah-ah. In the kitchen, Rea has three card decks in front of her. It's amazing that they're travelling so fast, yet so smoothly. She can almost assemble a card house. Except that it falls every time. It falls fastest with all three packs, the weight of too many cards making the ones at the bottom crumple easier. But with only the cards from one pack, it's hard to get them all balanced; there doesn't seem to be enough there to support the top cards.

She's just about sorted everything, created a system. The cards just about stand, in just about a house shape. Then they fall once more, all over the table, at some momentary judder. "Oh, come on!"

Scratch that 'smooth' comment...

constantasthenorthernstar: I'm still here, but all is lost. (Maybe I am better off alone)

Mari is half way home when she realises she's forgotten the bread. It's such a silly little thing to forget that she almost continues on her way. But she was asked to do something, and so, she turns and heads right back into the marketplace, grumbling all the way.

Accounts, she thinks as she hands over a few of the coins she's made today for two loaves of breads, some leek, some lamb and some cured meat she's fairly sure is pork, I must remember this when I look over the business accounts. The problem with working outside of the Hour is the time one must spend; subtract property rent from earnings, subtract wages for assistants. It's tiring.

"I'm home," she calls into the house once she's back. I didn't kill anyone today, she wants to joke, but it's probably best to keep that one inside. Subtract more property rent. She puts her spoils from the market on the counter, reaches and strokes Rhys the cat absentmindedly as the great orange beast jumps up to her. Subtract cat from earnings. Subtract herself. Subtract one child. Subtract another adult. "You didn't eat without me, did you?" Whatever is left is profit.

"Whoooo!!" He's mostly yelling to smash the silence that's built up. "Whoo! Yeah!"

Matty is five drinks down and regretting coming to the abandoned lake. It's a coming of age thing, all the cool older kids told him, we all came down here to drink beers and wait for the ghost to show up. So he'd come with them and they'd told stories about how a bunch of kids had come down a few years ago and the police had found them in the morning, just blood all over the place and one of the guys in the middle, calmly skinning the flesh off the bones of one girl, eating a sandwich made from another. They'd shot him and now his ghost haunted the abandoned lake house. You still hear him laughing! One of the older teens had laughed.

Except that one of them had gone off to pee earlier. He hadn't come back. Then another one had gone. Matty figured they were going to try and jump out later. That was why it was getting so quiet around the camp fire. Probably. He crushed an empty beer can. "Whoohoo! What a night, huh?"
